Sterling Tools expands into EV motors through licensing deal with AEM

Sterling Tools Limited has entered the electric vehicle motor segment through its subsidiary, Sterling Gtake E-Mobility. The company signed a licensing agreement with UK-based Advanced Electric Machines to manufacture magnet-free EV motors in India.

Sterling Tools Limited, an automotive component producer and market leader in Motor Control Units (MCUs), introduces the electric vehicle (EV) motor category through its subsidiary, Sterling Gtake E-Mobility (SGEM). Advanced Electric Machines (AEM) Ltd., UK, and SGEM have signed a technology licensing agreement for the production of rare-earth magnet-free traction motors in India. The motors will be manufactured at SGEM’s plant in Faridabad.

These motors, based on AEM’s proprietary technology, offer performance comparable to conventional EV motors without the use of rare earth materials, reducing reliance on international supply chains, particularly those associated with China.

Aligned with the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives, the programme supports domestic manufacturing. By offering an alternative to traditional motors, SGEM aims to contribute to the EV sector and reduce external dependencies.

The agreement also includes joint development of integrated motor and controller systems to meet demand for compact EV powertrain solutions. With the Indian traction motor market projected to reach ₹15,000 crore by 2030, the partnership enables SGEM to address multiple EV applications.
