Auto LPG fuels a cleaner and more secure energy future for India

By July 11, 2025 3:42 pm IST

As India moves toward cleaner mobility and energy independence, Auto LPG presents a practical and scalable solution. In this article, Suyash Gupta, Director General of the Indian Auto LPG Coalition, highlights the strategic role of Auto LPG in supporting a multi-fuel future and accelerating the country’s transition to net zero.

As the nation strives for energy independence and cleaner air, a multi-faceted approach is needed. India’s burgeoning economy and population demand a sustainable and reliable energy supply. While renewable energy sources like solar and wind power are being widely accepted, alternative fuels like Auto LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) offer a readily available and practical solution to bolster energy security and promote a greener future. Energy security is paramount for India’s economic growth and stability since dependence on imported fossil fuels exposes the nation to volatile global markets and geopolitical risks. To mitigate these vulnerabilities and ensure a consistent and affordable energy supply, diversification of the energy mix is the need of the hour.

Auto LPG: A Viable and Versatile Fuel
As India aims for net zero by 2070 with 50% non-fossil electricity by 2030 and ranks fourth globally in renewable energy capacity, supported by a 36.5% CAGR in solar over 11 years. The country raised INR16,000 crore (US$2 billion) through sovereign green bonds in FY23, introduced green deposits, and mandated ESG disclosures for its top 1,000 firms. It is pertinent that the third most widely used automotive fuel globally, Auto LPG, is an easily adaptable and readily available fuel that presents a compelling case as the ‘Net Zero Hero.’

  • Lower Emissions: Auto LPG vehicles emit significantly lower levels of harmful pollutants compared to gasoline and diesel vehicles. Studies have shown reductions in particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO), contributing to improved air quality, especially in urban areas.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Auto LPG is generally more affordable than gasoline and diesel, offering significant cost savings for vehicle owners. This economic advantage makes it an attractive option for both private and commercial vehicle operators.
  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: While not a zero-emission fuel, Auto LPG produces lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to gasoline and diesel, contributing to India’s efforts to combat climate change.
  • Ease of Conversion: Converting gasoline vehicles to Auto LPG is a relatively straightforward process, and a growing network of conversion centres is available across the country. This allows vehicle owners to switch to a cleaner fuel without significant disruption.
  • Infrastructure Readiness: Existing LPG infrastructure can be leveraged to support the adoption of Auto LPG with minimal modifications. This reduces the need for extensive new investments, making it a practical and scalable solution.
  • Auto LPG is not intended to be a silver bullet but rather a crucial component of a comprehensive multi-fuel strategy. By integrating Auto LPG with other energy sources, India can enhance its energy security and reduce its reliance on any single fuel. It can serve as a reliable backup fuel source to complement the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like solar and wind.

    Policy Support and Market Development:
To unlock Auto LPG’s full potential, supportive government policies and market development initiatives are essential. Offering financial incentives for Auto LPG vehicle conversions and purchases to encourage wider adoption and investing in the expansion of Auto LPG refuelling infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas, could help greatly in this regard. Additionally, educating the public about the benefits of Auto LPG through awareness campaigns can dispel misconceptions and promote informed decision-making. Moreover, simplifying regulations and licensing procedures for Auto LPG dispensing stations can encourage private sector investment.

    Final Thoughts
Given India’s growing urbanisation and rising vehicular emissions, the adoption of Auto LPG can significantly contribute to reducing air pollution, improving public health, and curbing dependence on expensive crude oil imports. As part of a well-defined multi-fuel strategy, the ‘Net Zero ’Hero’—Auto LPG—can play a pivotal role in diversifying the energy mix and ensuring a reliable and affordable mobility solution for all.
