Mazda to build new module pack plant in Japan

Mazda plans to build a new module pack plant in Iwakuni City, Japan, to produce automotive-grade cylindrical lithium-ion battery modules and packs. 

Mazda Motor Corporation plans to build a new module pack plant in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. The plant will manufacture automotive-grade cylindrical lithium-ion battery modules and packs, sourced from Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. Mazda plans to manufacture its first battery EV on a dedicated platform at its Japan facility, with an annual battery production capacity of 10 GWh.

Mazda has partnered with Panasonic Energy to procure cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for automotive use, in line with its 2030 Management Policy. The collaboration aims to address customer needs, regulatory changes, and global warming. In September 2024, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry certified the plan as a “plan to ensure a stable supply of storage batteries.”

The new plant will enable Mazda to create one-of-a-kind BEVs with improved design, superior convenience, and expanded driving ranges by using the facility’s novel battery backs. The plant will also help to create jobs and stimulate the local economy.
