Cabinet approves ₹3,706 Cr display chip unit in Jewar

The Indian government has approved a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn to establish a wafers manufacturing plant in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, to manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, and automobiles.

The Indian government has approved an HCL-Foxconn semiconductor joint venture, which will establish a wafers manufacturing plant at Jewar in Uttar Pradesh at an estimated cost of ₹3,706 crore. The plant will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, and other devices.

The unit approved is a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn. HCL has a long history of creating and producing hardware. Foxconn is a global leader in electronic manufacturing. They will work together to establish a facility near Jewar Airport in the Yamuna Motorway Industrial Development Authority, or YEIDA.

The unit in Jewar will process 20,000 wafers per month, creating 2,000 jobs and processing 36 million chips per month, totalling 3.6 crore. Bharat is constructing its sixth semiconductor unit, marking a significant step towards the development of the semiconductor industry.

The semiconductor industry in India is still in a nascent stage, with various local and multinational companies intending to tap its vast potential. Chip shortages during Covid realised the importance of indigenous manufacturing to fill deficiencies for national security and galvanise indigenous innovation.

The Jewar facility, backed by HCL’s hardware development expertise and Foxconn’s global electronics manufacturing expertise, is poised to significantly contribute to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and global semiconductor market.
