Kaynes Semicon achieves a milestone by manufacturing and exporting India’s first multi-chip module, marking a breakthrough in domestic semiconductor production.

In a landmark achievement for India’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, Kaynes Semicon, a subsidiary of Kaynes Technology India Ltd., has successfully produced and shipped the country’s first commercially manufactured multi-chip module (MCM) from its advanced Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat.

The delivery of 900 IPM5 modules to Alpha & Omega Semiconductor (AOS) in the USA was executed as part of the India Semiconductor Mission 1.0. The IPM5 module represents a significant engineering feat: it’s a sophisticated power device that consolidates 17 individual dies (including IGBTs, FRDs, diodes, and controller integrated circuits) into a single, high-performance unit. Successfully developing and delivering this component is a breakthrough for India, establishing its ability to domestically assemble and test advanced power modules for use in diverse applications like consumer electronics, industrial automation, clean energy, and the automotive industry, as reported by ET Manufacturing.

The newly developed Intelligent Power Module (IPM) has been dispatched to Alpha & Omega Semiconductor (AOS), a leading U.S.-based technology company, under a collaboration that also includes Mitsui as a strategic partner.

From a manufacturing perspective, the milestone highlights India’s growing capabilities in chip packaging, testing, and module assembly, which are critical links in the global semiconductor supply chain. Kaynes Semicon’s Sanand facility features high-precision assembly lines, automated testing equipment, and cleanroom infrastructure, all designed for export-grade quality and high-volume production.

The company’s achievement underscores the progress of India’s OSAT ecosystem, which plays a pivotal role in reducing reliance on imports while supporting high-performance electronics manufacturing for sectors such as automotive, industrial automation, and consumer durables.

According to industry experts, Kaynes’s success demonstrates how domestic manufacturers are moving up the technology curve from printed circuit board assembly to advanced semiconductor packaging aligned with the government’s “Make in India” and Semicon India initiatives.

With the first batch already shipped, Kaynes Semicon plans to scale production further, targeting global customers seeking a reliable and cost-efficient semiconductor manufacturing partner from India.
