With a grant of ₹100 crore, the Tamil Nadu govt. will open School of Semiconductor with IIT Madras. It will be the first semiconductor fab processing facility. At the centre, 4,500 professionals will be trained on semiconductor technologies.
The Tamil Nadu government is soon going to launch the ‘School of Semiconductor’ in India. This initiative will feature the first in situ lab supported by IIT Madras. Major semiconductor firms will also support the initiative. For the initiative, the Tamil Nadu government has committed an initial seed grant of ₹100 crore. With the setup of the semiconductor fab at the Central Polytechnic Campus, Chennai, the centre will focus on tech localisation and advanced research. The government officials will partner with MeitY to boost momentum at the centre.
By collaborating with the MeitY, the state will be involved in a robust talent development strategy. This is a crucial element of Tamil Nadu’s Semiconductor Mission 2030. The mission is a highlight of the 2025-26 state budget.
To meet the future demand in chip manufacturing, the centre will train 4,500 students. During the first phase, training will be imparted to 2,000 students. The modules will focus on fabrication techniques and advanced semiconductor design. The training will be offered through the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ scheme.
With a “lab-to-market” philosophy, the curriculum will cover practical applications and translational research. After completing the course, students can apply for six to seven roles. “We will operationalise the centre at the earliest,” said IIT Madras Director Prof V Kamakoti.
In addition, the initiative will further support MSMEs in enhancing their capability. The centre will drive innovation in domains like space technology, electric vehicles, and more.
