British Safety Council introduces safety audit services for high-risk operations

By March 18, 2021 6:06 pm IST

The audit service for high-risk operations will look at working at height, confined space entry, lifting operations, ground excavation, electrical safety, fire safety management, contractor safety, and specific areas like molten metal.

The British Safety Council, one of the world’s most trusted leaders in health, safety, and environmental management has introduced safety audit services for hazardous and high-risk business operations. The services would be delivered in India through its wholly-owned subsidiary based in Mumbai.

High-Risk Operations Safety Audit is an in-depth audit of situations that could potentially cause serious injuries and harm to people and property respectively. It helps organisations to focus on these activities. The audit actively looks at high-risk activities such as working at height, confined space entry, lifting operations, ground excavation, electrical safety, fire safety management, contractor safety, and specific areas like molten metal. Also, leadership commitment and accountability, risk assessment and management, and permit to work are reviewed in detail.

Speaking about the approach, Hemant Sethi, Country Head, British Safety Council, India said, “The audit is a deep dive into the controls of hazardous activities and effectiveness of existing safety initiatives related to the prevention of serious injuries. It follows a quantified, customised approach that benchmarks the organisation’s current level of safety performance concerning the high-risk activities against global best practice.”

The audit process requires active participation from all employees and is divided into four phases – Leadership commitment and planning, Implementation and operation, Performance monitoring and measurement, and Evaluation and continual improvement.

The findings from the audit will give the businesses visibility of where they stand in terms of high-risk activities, identifying opportunities for improvement. This is then followed by a consultancy that will help strengthen the areas that require attention through recommendations, knowledge sharing, and training. Overall, the audit will help companies build confidence in their safety systems and reinforce their ability to prevent injuries and fatalities at work.

Since its foundation in 1957, the British Safety Council has campaigned tirelessly to protect workers from accidents, hazards, and unsafe conditions and played a decisive role in the process that has led to the adoption of landmark health and safety legislation in the UK. Its members in more than 60 countries are committed to protecting and improving the wellbeing of workers, believing that a healthy and safe work environment is also good for business.
