MotulTech is industrial lubricants division of the Motul group, an international French industrial group, specialist for more than 160 years in high performance lubricants. In an interview with OEM Update, Yatendra Kumar, Business Head, MotulTech talks about what makes his company unique in the field of industrial lubricants. Excerpts:

What is the kind of lubricant to be selected for industrial applications? Mineral or synthetic?
Indian industrial sector is very big and there are different industries and different Industrial applications, where lubricants are being used. Conventional or mineral oils are produced from base oils coming by processing of selected crude oils. Hence has lots of variation in properties with change in source of crude oils. Our chemists need to work very hard to convert these base oils in to finished lubricants for desired performance. Though there are some applications where we can offer the products based on these mineral oil based products to satisfy the need of the customer, however whatever best our chemists do, there are many challenges which can’t be overcome by these mineral oil bases lubricants. So we introduced lubricants and greases based on synthetic base oils. These synthetic base oils are produced in the factory and can be modified to get the need of end application. Hence it is application of the products, which will decide whether someone need to use go with mineral based conventional lubricants or synthetic lubricants.

What are the factors that influence selection?
As mentioned earlier, we select the lubricant based on the needs of the application. Hence most critical factor is working environment which include atmospheric temperature, pollution, possibility and feasibility of relubrication. All our synthetic lubricants give much higher value then their cost. However users need to consider overall cost of ownership before making any decision.
