i-Center: Indexable Center Drill [May 2012]

Taiwan-based Nine9 Cutting Tools has developed the world’s first indexable center drill ‘i-Center’ (new replaceable super-hard chip) with high-efficiency which not only promotes cost reduction but also improves production. The technological innovation is intended to shorten the cutting (operating) time thus generating more production. i-Center is a unique solution to upgrade the center drill process into indexable generation – leaving HSS and Solid Carbide Centering as ancient history.
The most significant feature of this tool is that indexable insert can be replaced when the holder of a machine is installed well, where as for the previous generation tools, the machine must be adjusted for replacing the center drill. Holder: The holder is made of high alloy steel (40±2HRC) and the internal coolant channel is drilled to be compatible with a machine having an internal coolant supply. This supports higher cutting speeds and extended tool life of i-Center Indexable Insert. The i-Center holder can be clamped by side lock holder on machining center, CNC lathe as well as special purpose machines.

Indexable Insert: The insert is NC2032, a carbide grade of K20F and is TiAlN coated. The form of i-Center insert is ground as the HSS or Solid Carbide Center Drill. The feature of the i-Center insert is the assembly structure by using central screw and the two-fixed pins on both sides to precisely locate position of indexable insert. Based on this structure the repeatability precision for center hole diameter and angle can be ±0.02 mm in radial direction and ±0.05 mm in axial direction.In order to promote high-efficiency, the revolutionary “i-Center” has been designed for drilling center hole on the end of shaft. Whether it is a dead center or a live center, it is an indispensable and auxiliary tool for center hole processing especially for gear shafts, crank shafts, cam shafts etc. besides other long shaft work pieces.
