Indian pumps and valves market: growing healthy

An analysis on the Indian market for pumps and valves and how it thrives on struggling economy
The Indian market for pumps and valves, which continues to pick up at a healthy double-digit growth rate, has traditionally been dominated by international companies. The major factor for this market growth is the increasing demand from process manufacturing industries.
“Any process industries are mandatory for requirements of both pumps and valves,” echoed Sekar E, MD, Caliber Valves Pvt. Ltd. “Being involved various ongoing projects across the country; the pipeline requirements are enormous for both the items even sluggish market tendency.”
Even Aniket Kulkarni, Head – Corporate Strategy and Business Development, Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. feels the same. He shares, “The pumps and valves business in India is growing and this market is driven by the reduction in per capita water availability, rising urbanisation, infrastructure investment and industrialisation. Indian foundries have added capacities due to the closure of the foundries in the west.”India has also become the sought-out destination for raw castings and products like pumps and valves. Mr Kulkarni adds, “Pump and valve exports from India has grown by over two folds in the past 2 years. Most of the demand for pumps and valves in India is met with the products made in India. With the slowdown in Europe, US and Far East, BRIC is the market for these companies. There is an increasing awareness of energy-efficient pumping solutions in our country, and our company is at the forefront of providing such solutions to the market.”Growing demand“Present business inclinations are massive, and customer demands are more,” assures Mr Sekar.
As India is growing rapidly, a lot of upcoming projects and expansion are going on. Mr Sekar expects that the demand is going to be more for the next decade. He adds, “We roll up to modernise to meet various challenges against the customer requirement in time with appropriate price.”
According to Mr Kulkarni, “The organised pump and valve market in India is about Rs.8,500 crore and Rs.10,000 crore, respectively. The pump market is expected to grow by 6.5 per cent while the valve market is expected to grow by 7.1 per cent till 2017.”
Well-accepted productsThere are several well-accepted products like vertical execution multi-stage multi-outlet (MSMO) pumps, lowest life cycle cost (LLC) pumps and concrete volute (CV) pumps. Mr Kulkarni explains, “MSMO pumps save valuable space for the builders, developers and contractors. These pumps can be customised for up to seven outlets and eliminate the need for intermediate pump house and find application in high-rise buildings.”While asked about Kirloskar products, he says, “Our lowest life cycle cost pumps are in high demand, especially in the international market due to sustained energy efficiency over longer period and lowest pump maintenance cost. Slowly but surely, Indian market is realising the need to use energy-efficient products, and thus we see growing acceptance of LLC pumps in India.”
KBL has many firsts in India to its credit and concrete volute pump is one of it. Till date, KBL has installed more than 200 concrete volute pumps in India and abroad. It is the most suitable pumping option from techno-economic consideration for handling large volumes of water.
While asked about Caliber products, Mr Sekar shares, “More than decades, we are offering quite a range of products, catering various industries and proven us the performance facilitate us to develop new automation products for process industries.”
Innovative productsKirloskar has developed solar centrifugal pump with AC induction motor and the solar power conditioning unit “Jalverter”. “We have more than 400 solar pumps running in the Indian market,” reveals Mr Kulkarni. “The product has the potential to save millions of units of electricity for an energy starved nation like ours.”
Caliber Valves Pvt. Ltd., however, has various products and solutions under development. “In future, we tender quite range of spectacle products,” assures Mr Sekar.
