Honeywell, NTPC Green to Develop SAF in India

By June 2, 2025 6:07 pm IST

Honeywell signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTPC Green to explore the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India.

To investigate the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India, Honeywell and NTPC Green signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The collaboration will assess the production of SAF from carbon dioxide (CO₂) recovered from NTPC’s power facilities and green hydrogen using Honeywell’s exclusive eFining™ technology.

The initiative aligns with India’s energy security objectives and supports efforts to decarbonise the aviation industry. It highlights Honeywell’s strategic approach to sustainability and the energy transition. A major component of NTPC Green’s planned Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, is dedicated to SAF production.

According to DMR Panda, Executive Director (Green Hydrogen), NTPC Ltd., “We think that the aviation industry’s mandate to blend SAF in jet fuel will drive many early mover projects in green hydrogen.”

The partnership combines NTPC’s strength in green hydrogen research with Honeywell UOP’s proficiency in SAF production. SAF is considered essential for lowering aviation emissions.

Ranjit Kulkarni, Vice President and General Manager of Energy and Sustainability Solutions, Honeywell India, stated, “We are excited to work with NTPC Green on this initiative to advance India’s transition towards cleaner aviation fuels and the goal of working toward carbon neutrality. Our collaboration with NTPC Green will leverage Honeywell’s expertise in SAF solutions to efficiently treat emissions from thermal energy, foster green hydrogen adoption, diversify feedstocks for SAF production, and help India’s aviation sector meet long-term environmental goals.”

The study is expected to be finished by mid-2025 and intends to assist India in accomplishing its two goals: becoming a centre for the manufacture of SAF and lowering emissions through both domestic production and potential exports.
